How do I write a device driver for BeOS ?

Well you can start by looking at the Be Inc, newsletters archived here. More newsletter articles are archived

over at BeForever.com

There is also some good information rescued from the old BeDriven.com website which is archived here.

Where can I get technical documents on such-and-such hardware device ?

Try searching the net to see if there is a Linux driver for it, if so
they probably have a web page set up that has some sort of technical
docs on the
device. Also try the MFG’s web site, a few have specs listed.

Also check to see if the MFG has an open door to alternate OSes. If so they may be
easier to work with. I know that
Creative Labs seems to be open to the idea.

I can’t find a driver for my such-and-such hardware, have you seen one ?

Most of the time if there is a driver you’ll be able to find it online. Check the Hardware Matrix
to see if others have gotten such hardware to work in BeOS. If not, then there is probably not a BeOS driver for it. Also there’s a few Haiku drivers in the works that may work for you, check the Haiku Build Factory, note these won’t work in Windows. If you are looking for Windows drivers you’re on the wrong web site… move along.

Will you write one then ?

Probably not me, but you can post your requests here and I can add it to the list of drivers wanted and
when I update the Most Wanted Drivers page, I’ll add it in then.

Can I help write drivers ?

Depends on your skills, if you can program in C/C++ then maybe. Join in the BeDriverTalk mailing
list
, then check the message archive a bit to get an idea of what is already going on.

Is that the entire FAQ ?

Well so far it is. I’ll add more as I get some free time. If you have something to add, send us an email.
